Taking the artistic work of the Iranian artist Maryam Kouhestani as a starting point, Director Georg Hoffmann invites visitors on a guided tour of the exhibition Violence – Society. Austria in the Age of the World Wars 1918 to 1956. The tour offers a historical perspective on how groups of people were denied their rights and the social conditions that allowed it to happen.

The poetic work of the artist Maryam Kouhestani is dedicated to the struggle of Iranian women for freedom.

They wage this struggle without weapons, acting both individually and in solidarity. The work reflects the idea that there will always be hope as long as people strive to progress and to rise after a fall. For the artist, it is the strength and perseverance along the way which embody the essence of life.

The film was shot in the Abuzeydabad desert near the city of Kashan in Iran. In Austria, the film performance will have its premiere in 2026 as part of VIENNA ART WEEK at the Museum of Military History.

In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. Twenty photographers came together for a fundraiser, among them Zara Pfeifer, Daniel Gebhart de Koekkoek, Stefanie Moshammer and Thomas Albdorf. This grew into the exhibition series Fotografie am Brillantengrund. Later, international names such as Erik Kessels and Max Siedentopf joined.

Thirteen years on, there is a reunion. A core group of the original photographers each show one work from the early years next to a current one.

Vienna Actionism represents one of the most radical art movements of the 20th century. Its radicalism stems, amongst other things, from its intense engagement with the social and existential fears of post-war Austria.

By exploring the corporeal fears of injury, mutilation, and castration, the artists addressed deep-seated existential fears such as the fear of loss or death. In doing so, they consistently used the body as a channel to reveal repressed matters and, at the same time, as a means of intervening into the fears of the post-war era. As a result, various forms and meanings of fear were brought to light.

In addition to confronting personal fears and the trauma of war, Vienna Actionism also sought to grapple with collective guilt. Its four main protagonists—Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler—used public actions and photographic documentation to visualize the fear of one’s own history and to illustrate the most recently displayed human capacity for violence and bigotry.

Their practices and themes earned the Actionists a reputation as a genuine threat to conventional moral values and bourgeois order. Yet the artists’ self-declared aim was not so much to shock as to achieve collective liberation from fears through subjective self-sacrifice: hot wax on the limbs, razor blades in the cheek, needle pricks in the skin, scenes of self-mutilation and self-crucifixion.

On the occasion of VIENNA ART WEEK, the WIENER AKTIONISMUS MUSEUM brings these artistic endeavors into the present and explores both the potential and the problematics of those past actions in addressing the fears of today.

Artist Talk with Berthold Ecker: ‚WERKSCHAU XXXI GABRIELE ROTHEMANN‘

10/11/2026

18:30 — 20:00 h

FOTOGALERIE WIEN

Währinger Straße 59, 1090 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

For its 31st WERKSCHAU, FOTOGALERIE WIEN has invited the artist Gabriele Rothemann. After 25 years of teaching at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Rothemann is embarking on a new chapter in her life. As Professor of Artistic Photography, she founded the Photography Class within the Department of Fine Arts, established contemporary technical conditions for photography as an artistic medium, and provided important conceptual impulses for photography in Vienna.

In the field of art, teaching and one’s own artistic practice are inextricably linked. The separation of these two spheres has now also resulted in a new place of work. Setting up the new studio brought with it aesthetic experiences that, like her attentive observation of the everyday, the archaic, the philosophical, the mythological, and the political, have found their way into Rothemann’s artistic practice.

Just as a river adapts its course to geological conditions, the artist meanders through the experiences absorbed by her alert mind, reconstructing them aesthetically and conceptually. The result is a set of pictorial realities deeply rooted in the collective experience of humanity.

Together with other key works, these form a media-reflexive fabric that engages with the conditio humana. (Berthold Ecker)

'Sophie Dvořák: Landscape of Events' - Finissage and Talk

13/11/2026

17:00 — 20:00 h

GALERIE3

Schleifmühlgasse 3, 1040 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

As part of Vienna Art Week, GALERIE3 presents cartographic collages by Sophie Dvořák, including works from the series Landscape of Events. The exhibition will conclude with an open discussion featuring Sophie Dvořák, Nikolaus Schobesberger (Director of the Map and Globe Collection at the Austrian National Library), and Andreas Spiegl (cultural theorist, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna).

The series draws on historical atlases from different periods and countries, in which history is conveyed through geographical representations, symbols, and legends.

The artist transforms each atlas into two collages. One brings together the symbols and legends used throughout the atlas in chronological order, thereby revealing the systems of codification underlying them. The second reassembles fragments of maps, shifting their original spatial and historical relationships.

Dvořák’s practice is shaped by an engagement with historical and cartographic material, which she disassembles, reorganises, and places into altered contexts. Through processes of displacement, fragmentation, and reordering, structures and connections become visible that remain hidden within the original material. Historical cartography is thus brought into a contemporary context and critically re-examined – along with the way we perceive and understand the world.

For the finissage, an open discussion with Sophie Dvořák and other experts will take place. The conversation will explore the works within a broader context, focusing on the shifting nature of borders in geopolitics and art.

What perspectives can emerge through artistic reordering? What potential lies in the possibility of displacement and shifting? And how can imagination help us navigate fear?

Performance & Panel: 'Residual~Futures: Presence and Interaction with Unnoticed Entities'

11/11/2026

19:00 — 22:00 h

WEST Reallabor Fassfabrik

Lastenstraße 19, 1230 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGES: GERMAN AND ENGLISH

As part of the Residual~Futures exhibition—on view at the WEST Reallabor Fassfabrik from November 7 to 13, 2026—the Reallabor invites you to a panel discussion and performance.

This past August, artists Phin Anibal and Wanling Mo spent three weeks as the first artists-in-residence at the WEST Reallabor Fassfabrik. They were selected for their commitment to site-specific artistic research and their interest in interdisciplinary, collaborative working processes.

During their residency, both artists explored the potential of presence, attention, and interaction, and how these elements can shift our perspective to perceive traces of overlooked, abandoned, or ignored entities. This process gave rise to multi-layered ecologies of reflection and a reorientation of values toward relationality.

Set against the backdrop of a historic moment in which artificial intelligence and the climate emergency threaten our existence, the panel discussion focuses on site-specific and relational research at the intersection of art, science, and social change. Why is it important to engage with this work right now? How can it be situated within the context of these existential questions? And how can artists and institutions align their work to achieve tangible impact?

Curator and author Lorena Moreno Vera will host residency jury members Christoph Thun-Hohenstein (ReGenerativa.eu) and Sebastian Haselsteiner (STRABAG ART), Reallabor Fassfabrik Artistic Director Sabine Maier, and artist Gerhard Lang.

Following the panel discussion, Wanling Mo will present a performance developed during her residency.

“…For a woman to opt for a career at all, much less for a career in art, …[she requires] a certain amount of unconventionality, both in the past and at present; whether or not the woman artist rebels against or finds strength in the attitude of her family, she must in any case have a good strong streak of rebellion in her to make her way in the art world at all, rather than submitting to the socially approved role of wife and mother, the only role to which every social institution consigns her automatically.” (Linda Nochlin, 1971)

Good Luck Mütterchen xx is a ‘keep calm and carry on’ exhibition of works by, for and about artist parents, carving time for art out of necessity, memory, precarity, doubt, patriarchy, society, biology and culture.

Simon Nagy

Schillerplatz 3, 1010 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

Writer and art educator Simon Nagy (trafo.K) has developed a special tour inspired by this year’s VIENNA ART WEEK theme, taking participants to selected sites in Vienna’s city centre:

With the slogan “No fear”, we remind each other not to be intimidated by the divisive, isolating and scaremongering politics of the far-right. But what if we turn our gaze the other way for a moment – and ask: What fears live rent-free in the heads and structures that are driving the current rise of fascism?

This question builds the core of the city walk. For the politics of brutalisation, cruelty and violence, which are gaining strength worldwide, ultimately spring from paranoid fear itself: fear of dissolution, fear of plurality, fear of difference. These are abstract terms; yet their effects manifest themselves quite clearly in Vienna’s urban landscape.

After having sharpened our fear-critical gaze on Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Last Judgement’ triptych in the Paintings Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts, we step out into the November daze and visit three such manifestations together: the Benko ruins on Mariahilfer Straße, the Habsburg skulls in the Kapuzinergruft, and finally the memorial to Karl Lueger at the Stubentor, which has already been re-labelled a ‘disgrace’.

At these three very different locations, we will discuss what those in power are afraid of – and how we might help to turn their fears and our desires into reality.

Due to limited capacity, registration is required. Click here to register!

Opening: ‚ABLAZE. A tomography of artificial power‘

11/11/2026

19:00 — 21:00 h

Kunstraum Eckermann Nestler

Neulinggasse 9, 1030 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN / ENGLISH

An exhibition by Sylvia Eckermann / Gerald Nestler / Aaron Berman.

ABLAZE is an interactive art installation that opens with an experimental live demonstration. The project intervenes directly in the inner workings of large language models (LLMs), turning their internal structures into artistic material.

How do these models learn behavioural patterns of authority and subjection? And can those patterns be changed? The opening demonstration traces patterns of power within a language model and explores how they can be experimentally shifted or weakened. Visual translations, sounds, and narratives bring these otherwise hidden processes into view and make their effects perceptible.

The exhibition invites visitors to experiment for themselves. They can enter their own prompts and adjust the models along selected axes between power and powerlessness, authority and subjection, exploring how the responses change. This interaction reveals how interventions in the models’ internal structures make some answers more likely and others less so. Rather than taking a response as an unquestioned truth, visitors encounter a range of possibilities that can be altered through these internal interventions. What room does this open for deviation and refusal?

ABLAZE explores an aesthetics of resolution: making patterns of power perceptible while experimenting with ways to loosen their hold. Through this artistic exploration, the project asks: How can we better understand the systems that increasingly shape our everyday lives? And how can we use that understanding to strengthen our capacity to act and, when necessary, resist?

Opening: 11 November, 7.00–9.00 pm
Exhibition opening hours: 12–15 November, 3.00–6.00 pm.

LLLake & LLLLLL artist run space

am Seestadt See, Zaha Hadid Platz, 1220 Wien

EVENT LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

The exhibition Das letzte Abendblau is the final exhibition and concluding project of the new public art initiative LLLake, to be established in 2026 at Zaha Hadid Platz, directly adjacent to the newly redesigned northern shore of the Seestadt lake.

Zaha Hadid Platz is currently Seestadt’s central site for art and culture in public space, situated at the transition between undeveloped land and the final architectural development of Seestadt planned for this location from 2028 onwards.

The first artistic intervention at the site by LLLake was realized as a collaboration between Bartosz Dolhun and Reinhold Zisser, with the aim of conceiving the new site as a Gesamtkunstwerk in public space. Sculptural works and media installations flow seamlessly into spatial displays and the overall architecture of the central container structure.

LLLake is directly connected to the exhibition space LLLLLL, which has operated in Seestadt since 2024 as an exhibition space for contemporary artists engaging with questions of public space. It is the first art space in Vienna explicitly dedicated to this subject. The work of Reinhold Zisser and the association LLLLLL, which he directs, builds on a series of projects that originated with the Notgalerie and were developed in Seestadt between 2017 and 2020.

Artists

Bartosz Dolhun / Anna Marie Lutz / Johannes Milchram / Yevheniia Pavlova / Reinhold Zisser

PLEASE NOTE:

The opening will take place at LLLake on Zaha Hadid Square on the northern shore of the Seestadt lake. The exhibition at LLLake will be extended to the LLLLLL artist-run space.

In case of bad weather, the LLLLLL artist-run space (Sonnenallee 26/3, 1220 Vienna) will serve as the main venue.

Fear Writes History
Emotion at Work
Who’s Afraid of Fear?

Fear arises when deeply historical experience suddenly re-emerges, and
comes to life as a possible version of the present.

flat1’s 2025 annual programme explored the role of fear in contemporary society.

We postulate: history is not written by people, but by their emotions. Drawing on the historical development of collective emotions, as analysed by historians of emotion and sociologists, we ask: how do cross-societal emotions influence our collective and individual behaviour, particularly in times of great uncertainty?

Systems created by humans can be significantly and very easily influenced by human emotions — often far more than intended. The phenomenon of ‘Black Friday’, for example, demonstrates that it is precisely those feelings that are scarcely grounded in reality that can have serious consequences.

What makes this particularly fascinating is that, from today’s perspective, the original problem appears minimal and is out of all proportion to the emotional reaction of the population. Yet it was precisely this overreaction that turned it into the fateful Black Friday we know today.

William James locates the largely underestimated significance of emotion and historical experience primarily in all forms of memory.

Although humans like to portray themselves as predominantly rational beings, the events of the past tell a different story.

In William Reddy’s view, however, the expression of a feeling not only alters the inner reality of the person experiencing it, but also inevitably elicits an emotional response from others. One could therefore also say:

“every expression of emotion has an effect on the inner and/or outer world.”

(Bettina Hitzer – History of Emotions: A Beginning with Consequences).

Our emotional world is thus frequently, and even in circumstances less defining of an era, translated into the external world much more directly than we give it credit for. It may be intuitively easy to grasp, but is nonetheless worth articulating: expressions of emotion form a network and interact.

Taking this line of thought further, one might raise the serious suspicion that human beings are losing control of their own historiography by portraying themselves retrospectively as more rational than they actually are.

The question arises as to whether, in reality, fears made decisions for us humans in the past, or, more broadly, whether we humans have reacted far more to a predetermined emotional landscape than we would like to admit?

The work of historians of emotion such as Carol Z. Stearns, Peter N. Stearns and Arlie Hochschild provides a theoretical basis for such considerations. ‘

‘Emotionology’ describes the interplay between emotional norms and actual feelings. Feelings such as fear are shaped and reinforced by social norms, and in turn influence social and political decisions.

Researchers such as Jan Plamper (History of Emotions) and Barbara H. Rosenwein (Emotional Communities) also provide important analytical foundations. Plamper, for instance, describes how “emotions are historical entities, shaped and transformed by social, cultural and political forces” (Plamper, 2015).

Consequently, emotions are not fixed quantities, but change within a historical context. Rosenwein emphasises the role of ‘emotional communities’, in which ‘shared emotional expressions and norms’ determine the social fabric (Rosenwein, 2006).

Ultimately, this curatorial concept is therefore an artistic exploration of the question: Would it be more accurate to speak of a history of emotions rather than a history of humanity? And how could, or rather should, one counteract (excessive) emotionalisation?

The annual programme on the emotion of FEAR is not merely intended to paint an artistic picture of fear in modern society. It aims to explore the complexity of this emotion, both on an individual and a collective level, and to highlight how societal emotional norms and individual feelings interact.

At the same time, it seeks to shed light on the mechanisms through which fear fuels social radicalisation and conflict.

Open Your Cases
Group Performance

As a one-time event within the exhibition The Dinner Party_Reloaded, the participating artists in “Open Your Cases” address the collective struggle to overcome the fear of being erased from history as female protagonists. The project references the historic The Dinner Party (1979)* by American artist Judy Chicago, in which she exhibited 39 elaborately arranged place settings on a banquet table. Each place setting represented a well-known woman from mythology or history.

The exhibition The Dinner Party_Reloaded is dedicated to female activists from politics, society, and culture, thereby addressing the theme of representation and participation of women’s perspectives from a contemporary viewpoint. This time, the party takes the form of a picnic, with the place settings dedicated to the women designed as filled picnic baskets.
In the performance, the picnic baskets are opened and presented with a performance corresponding to the honored activists. Surprises and interactive moments are included.

IntAkt – International Association of Female Visual Artists – sees itself as a feminist-inspired network of women artists. It was founded in 1977 to improve the social and artistic conditions of female visual artists and to counteract their marginalization within a male-dominated art scene. The activities of the early years, which consisted of cultural-political initiatives and actions, are being continued in order to draw attention to the situation of women artists, which remains difficult even today, and to support IntAkt artists in their work through collective action.

„The Burrow” based on the short story from Franz Kafka

At the performance and exhibition Cathérine Lehnerer, Anne Altmeyer and Lisa Rosetta Hartmann will take us on a journey in the labyrinthian realm of the creature from Franz Kafka’s story „The Burrow”.

For the creature angst becomes its life dominating concern, as the actual hunter starts to feel hunted and starts digging deeper and deeper into its burrow. Its supposed safe space becomes a prison, while the creature starts to loose itself in its underground maze of angst. ,Navigating Angst’ becomes a never ending self serving purpose, especially, when the creature declares angst to a fetish. Furthermore ,Navigating Angst’ turns from a symbolic to a concrete image.

At the live performance based on Kafka’s story a Sonic Comic emerges, illustrated by Cathérine Lehnerer in the style of a graphic novel on the glass windows in the showcase of Atelier Moos. The act of painting is accompanied by electronic sound art with narrative elements from Anne Altmeyer. Lisa Rosetta Hartmann’s photographies, as part of the exhibition and spatial installation, of prepared carefully exposed and vetted small animals, resembling the small animals, which are eaten and gathered by Kafka’s creature, complement the story from another point of view.

They not only comment on, what is left out of focus, while navigating angst, but also comment on the relationship between humans and their environment. An acknowledgment and repair of an irretrievable future. Supplementary comic zines about Kafka’s story made by the artists are shown in the exhibition, making the process of working with the literature tangible.

No registration required.

Guided tour: "Liminal Spaces" von Bernd Oppl

13/11/2026

Hertha-Firnberg-Straße 10/stiege 4 top 1, Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

The guided tour of the exhibition Liminal Spaces (4 November–5 December 2026) offers an insight into the multimedia work of artist Bernd Oppl, which fundamentally explores the uncertainty (of perception) in an elusive world characterised by stark contrasts.

The works on display – lightbox photographs, dioramas, videos and spatial objects – explore the phenomenon of places that exist “between” states or meanings.

Liminal spaces are spaces that appear familiar, yet simultaneously feel uncanny, surreal and otherworldly, as they are deserted or torn from their normal context. Or because they are suddenly overwhelmed by chaotic events. Through his works, in which realities intermingle, Oppl subtly succeeds in addressing existential feelings, inner states and fears.

This is accompanied acoustically by a sound installation developed specifically for the exhibition, which uses repetitive sound patterns that never reach a clear conclusion, thereby reinforcing the sense of liminality.

“{Gegenpol} habitamus polaris” is a collective video-installation and screening environment conceived for the Glass Pavilion at the Bezirksmuseum Brigittenau. Bringing together artists from diverse geographies and contexts connected to Vienna and beyond, the project approaches togetherness as a spatial and relational form of navigating uncertainty.

The installation unfolds through moving-image works projected onto transparent surfaces, reflective elements, and articulated structures that transform the Glas Pavilion into a permeable filmic habitat. Throughout the evening and into the night, the space becomes a shifting constellation of images, voices, reflections, sonic fragments, and encounters oscillating between intimacy and collectivity, opacity and visibility, fragility and resonance.

Rather than positioning anxiety as an individual condition, the project understands it as something structurally produced through political, ecological, technological, and social instability. In response, “{Gegenpol} habitamus polaris” proposes an open atmosphere of encounter and shared presence, where moving images become carriers of relation, memory, permeability, and exchange.

The screening begins at sunset and gradually unfolds into the dark hours, concluding at daybreak. Within this temporal passage, the installation functions as a living and continuously transforming environment in which works enter into dialogue through proximity, reflection, interruption, and overlap. Chirping conversations, sonic fragments, spontaneous interactions, and informal gatherings activate the space as a collective situation rather than a fixed exhibition display.

Alongside the screening, a Soup Talk will create a conversational and communal setting that nourishes the gathering both literally and discursively. The evening opening will be performatively moderated by art historian Synne Genzmer together with artist Juliana Herrero.

The earth’s core lies 6000 km below us. The sheer existence of this core and the range of questions around what it consists of have long been sites for human projection and speculation, and continue to test the limits of our visual, acoustic and existential imagination.

FORMER MINE digs in and around past and present conceptions of Allmende and appropriation, excavating porous and manifest undergrounds and psycho-acoustic landscapes. Here, historical hypotheses and contemporary debates about these shifting layers beneath us are undermined, their contours redrawn.

There is this small inner spark right before things happen a subtle pull forward, a barely tangible impulse that says: keep going.

Even when nothing is certain.

A brief rise, just before everything dissolves again. Nothing stays completely fixed, nothing completely distant. Control fades, structures break down, forms slip away.

What remains is movement.

A pressure.

A need for more, for forward, for one more time.

An ongoing search for orientation that never fully resolves.

Neurotransmitters are not only created in moments of arrival, but in the process of moving through. They keep us connected to the future, even when it feels unclear or threatening.

In this tension, navigation becomes a kind of tentative moving forward without guaranteed outcomes; like a ship in the highest waves of the sea. Fear becomes the material from which new paths are continually formed.

The exhibition BotenStoff, a collaboration between Werd:art and Galerie Gugging, explores this space of tension.

It shows how perception can be understood as physical, fragile, and at the same time resilient. Different lived experiences meet without being smoothed out—and it is precisely there that a form of orientation in motion emerges.

Project Four

Operngasse 4, 1010 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

PROJECT FOUR brings together four forms of creative practice: visual art, music, literature, and performance. Through exhibitions, collaborative projects, and open conversations, it creates encounters between artists and audiences that extend beyond the finished work.

At its core is a desire to bring audiences closer to the processes, questions, and experiences that shape artistic practice, allowing ideas to be felt as much as understood.

For VIENNA ART WEEK 2026, PROJECT FOUR presents Filipino artist Jon Cuyson’s Paratethys / Pakikiramdam (Sensing the Sea), curated by Klaus Speidel and Ken Mapayo.

Responding to Vienna’s geological past beneath the ancient Paratethys Sea, Cuyson brings this submerged history into conversation with pakikiramdam, a Filipino way of sensing and attuning to one’s surroundings.

Through painting, sculpture, sound, and moving image, the project transforms a Vienna cellar into a space for sensing what lies beneath, around, and within us.

The project will be accompanied by screenings, guided tours, and conversations, including a proposed talk with a Paratethys expert from the Natural History Museum Vienna. Research at the museum describes the ancient Paratethys as an extraordinary Miocene biodiversity hotspot, with species richness surpassed today by tropical marine diversity around the Philippines. This unexpected connection brings Vienna’s vanished sea into resonance with the living marine ecologies of the Philippines, linking two distant environments across deep time.

We work within a state of provisionality — between experimentation and restriction, openness and regulation, collective use and individual uncertainty. Fear appears here less as the subject of individual works than as a structural condition that inscribes itself directly into materials, working methods, and forms of collaboration.

At the same time, we do not understand fear as something that must be overcome or suppressed. Even though it shapes contemporary artistic production, it should not become the sole measure of artistic decisions. Rather, we are interested in how an awareness of uncertainty can be developed without allowing oneself to be completely consumed by it.

Fear can act both as a motor and as an obstacle — making fractures, fragilities, and limitations visible, while simultaneously opening up new forms of attention, resilience, and experimentation. It is precisely within unstable conditions that new modes of collaboration, new forms of expression, and possibilities for rethinking artistic practice begin to emerge.

During VIENNA ART WEEK, visitors navigate through studios, vacant office spaces, transitional zones, installations, and performances distributed throughout the building. The project does not understand itself as a closed exhibition, but rather as an open and intensifying process within which new works, relationships, and performative situations can develop. Different artistic positions respond to the spatial, social, and political conditions of the building while entering into dialogue with one another.

Das Nüll is located in a former MA11 building opposite a police station in Vienna’s 10th district. Once a site of institutional care, administration, and control, the building is now temporarily occupied by artists, cultural workers, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. The history of the building, its architecture, and its present conditions shape the artistic processes emerging within it. The space remains simultaneously an experiment and a restriction: a place that enables openness while continuously remaining bound to institutional conditions.

The basement of the building occupies a particularly central role within the project. As the substructure of the house, it carries traces of its history, its infrastructure, and its invisibility. The basement is not understood as a neutral exhibition space, but as a condensed space of different artistic positions — functioning simultaneously as a space of fear, projection surface, and temporary refuge. We are especially interested in those areas of the building that resist clear function, institutional order, or representation.

Through installations, interventions, and performances, spaces emerge that oscillate between visibility and concealment, protection and uncertainty.

By the end of 2027, the building must be vacated and returned to its original condition. Walls must be handed back white, floors left immaculate. The temporary nature of the space inscribes itself directly into the production of the works and makes visible how deeply artistic freedom remains entangled with institutional, spatial, and economic conditions.

The project does not seek resolution or stability. Rather, we are interested in the new perspectives, forms of collaboration, and modes of artistic agency that can emerge within fragile conditions. In this sense, the building itself becomes a resonating body for a present shaped by uncertainty, while simultaneously generating new possibilities for thinking, producing, and living together.

Opening: ‚Linda Christanell. The Gifts of the Goddess’

Künstlerhaus Vereinigung

Karlsplatz 5, 1010 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

As part of Vienna Art Week “Navigating Angst,” we warmly invite you to the opening and exhibition of Linda Christanell. The Gifts of the Goddess.

As one of the pioneers of the feminist avant-garde of the 1970s, Christanell worked under conditions of structural exclusion, limited access to resources, and ongoing economic pressure that particularly marginalized female positions within experimental film. Her work is considered one of the important artistic positions of its time.

Christanell employed film, photography, performance, and installation to critically reflect on social norms, gender roles, and power structures. Through poetic, often subtle imagery, she questioned the visibility and self-determination of women. Her artistic practice combines personal experience with political conviction and continues to shape contemporary discourse surrounding the body, identity, and female perspectives.

This retrospective presents, for the first time, Christanell’s complete early body of work, extending through to her films. Previously largely unknown film material has been restored and will be presented in cooperation with the Austrian Film Museum. In addition, the exhibition features contemporary feminist positions that build upon Christanell’s artistic approaches.

The juxtaposition with works by younger feminist artists reveals the enduring relevance of her oeuvre, while also pointing to the continuity of feminist concerns and their evolution under present-day conditions. Questions of visibility, power, female autonomy, as well as the body and the image, are more urgent today than ever before.

Opening: ‚Raffael Strasser: 82,2 kg Lead'

11/11/2026

18:00 — 20:00 h

KUNSTZELLE

Währinger Straße 59, 1090 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

Raffael Strasser’s installation explores the ecological and psychological dimensions of hunting from a non-anthropocentric perspective. The starting point is a precisely defined quantity of material: 2,283 spent lead cartridges – a quantity corresponding to an original weight of 82.2 kg. This figure represents the elusive daily quantity of lead introduced into the soil and forests of Austria through hunting activities.

In the context of ‘NAVIGATING ANGST’, the work focuses on the perception of hunted animals. Lead is primarily used in driven hunts. Through the use of noise, animals are plunged into a state of panic, disorientation and acute threat, flushed out and driven into the hunters’ sights. Strasser makes the scale of these hunts comprehensible.

The use of cartridges as the central material highlights the severe toxicity of lead and the associated environmental impact, and brings to light the invisible traces of human interference in ecosystems. No one is held accountable for either the environmental impact or the psychological distress caused to the animals.

The work takes a sober, data-driven approach and deliberately avoids the use of illustrative diagrams.

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN / ENGLISH

A project by Julia Bugram in cooperation with the ASH Forum.

“Ein Lichtblick” (A Ray of Hope) brings together a visit to the exhibition Sie war(en) da (She/They were there)¹ at Frau* schafft Raum, a guided walk, and a participatory picnic offering space for connection, conversation, and information about support services for women*.

PROGRAM AND CONTENT

The meeting point is the exhibition (Nussdorferstraße 4, 1090 Vienna) on Monday, November 9 at 6:00 pm. There will be an information stand by StoP on site, already distributing information from 5:30 pm onwards.

At 6:00 pm, the event will begin with the Samba Sisters and a brief introduction to the exhibition & topic.

Accompanied by drumming, we will walk together for approx. 25 minutes to the club room of the Albert Schweitzer Haus (Garnisongasse 14–16, 1090 Vienna). There will be a brief introduction of the institutions present.

Afterwards, each representative of an institution will go to their own table, and the picnic and conversation (in smaller, more informal, personal groups) will begin. Representatives of the following institutions will be present: ASH-Forum, AÖF (Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters), StoP, Frauenhelpline, Women’s Shelters Vienna, Violence Protection Centre, Samba Sisters, and others.

In the spirit of empowerment, support services for women* (who have experienced violence) in Vienna will be presented. This initiative sees itself as a ray of hope and aims to bring together those affected*, survivors*, bereaved people*, those commemorating*, helpers*, and interested people* for a respectful exchange and to show who provides help, where, and how. To learn from one another – to strengthen one another.

Registration requested: office@ash-forum.at (Click here to register).

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT

By September 12, 2026 alone, eighteen (!) femicides had already been recorded in Austria. This violence is not an exception, but an expression of patriarchal power relations in which fear is part of everyday life for many people read as female – on the way home, at the workplace, in digital spaces, or in intimate relationships. Here, fear is not an individual feeling, but a social structure that shapes perception, movement, and possibilities for action.

Based on the curatorial guiding theme “Navigating Angst”, this format is not intended as a mere engagement with violence, but rather as a search for possibilities for action – ideally a positive outlook – within this reality (and a way out of scenarios of violence).

At the centre are questions such as: How can fear be navigated without becoming paralysed by it? What spaces of safety, solidarity, and support can be created? How do we deal with it? How can we keep going?

Especially in view of media coverage, which is often characterised by escalation, failure, and powerlessness (“he was known to the authorities”, “intervention did not happen in time”), this format deliberately aims to set a different focus: not on resignation, but on making help, collective strength, and concrete support structures visible.

With the thoughts “You are not alone. You are not alone. There are people and places that can help you” in mind, we come together for a picnic that brings together people and initiatives actively working against violence against women* and enabling spaces of protection.

¹ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

In this installation, women* who were murdered are not reduced to being victims. Sie war(en) da (She/They were there) is an immersive, audio-visual installation that gives space to the memories and lives of these women*. From whispered memories of people close to them, an atmospheric soundscape emerges, which continues to grow through the active participation of visitors*. The installation is complemented by drawings that make fragments of the lives told visible – a quiet counterpoint to forgetting.

The “AI in Art” scholarship was announced by the federal government for the first time. In 2025, twenty artists each received 9,000 euros and were able to work on their AI-related projects for six months. This event invites them all to look back on their experiences and reflect on how their perception of AI has evolved since then:

Has AI become an integral part of their work?
Do they now consciously choose not to work with AI – or even against it?
How do they feel about the fear of AI, which is currently having a particularly strong impact on the creative professions?

In a fishbowl format, the artists will have their say whilst their works are displayed on screen. The discussion, which may take place in German or English, will be moderated by Klaus Speidel, philosopher, Head of artloop by AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, and founder of the Vienna AI Talks.

Final group exhibition as part of Curators’ Agenda: VIENNA 2026

Curated by Sooyeon An, Ilaria Cera, Sharrat Cherry, Sofía Enríquez González, Jess Łukawska and Temitayo Olalekan
Curatorial support & supervision: Dr Anamarija Batista
Assistance & Coordination: Elena Blum

Dates: 9 November 2026 – 6 February 2027
Venue: DAS WEISSE HAUS, basement
Address: Hegelgasse 14, 1010 Vienna, Austria

Opening: Saturday, 7 November 2026, 6.00 pm

Organised as part of Curators’ Agenda: VIENNA 2026, this exhibition has been collectively developed by a group of emerging international curators and presents works by students and alumni of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna that critically engage with key issues of our time. The starting point is DAS WEISSE HAUS’s programme theme for 2026: IN(TER)DEPENDENCE.

In a global climate characterised by hyper-individualism and shifting political structures, the concepts of dependence and independence are deeply fraught with tension. Thus, IN(TER)DEPENDENCE is viewed not only as a social reality, but as a lens through which we can address the fundamental uncertainties of our time. Whilst ‘fear’ often stems from a loss of control or the collapse of familiar systems, the exhibition explores how acknowledging our reliance on others – both human and non-human actors – can open up new ways of navigating a world without fixed certainties.

During their two-month stay in Vienna, the participating curators explore the contemporary art scene. Through dialogue with artists working in Vienna and visits to various institutions, studios and galleries, they examine the precarious conditions and changing systems that shape artistic production today.

Ultimately, the exhibition invites visitors to explore IN(TER)DEPENDENCE as a space for navigating our shared existence – a space that transcends the duality of independence and dependence in order to find agency within the shared unknown.

This exhibition presents the outcome of the intensive residency programme Curators’ Agenda: VIENNA 2026. It is being realised in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and under the direction of curator and researcher Anamarija Batista.

Curators’ Agenda was launched in 2015 by the Vienna-based association BLOCKFREI and is an annual residency programme that offers international curators the opportunity to expand their curatorial knowledge and engage with the Viennese art scene for eight weeks. In January 2024, the BLOCKFREI Collective (Nevena Janković, Eva Kovač and Jana Dolečki) took over the management of DAS WEISSE HAUS and integrated this residency project into the programme of DAS WEISSE HAUS.

Further details about the exhibition and the participating artists will follow shortly.

Currently Not Available in Your Country or Region is a participatory curatorial project that explores migration through the intimate and material perspective of personal objects.

Within the context of Navigating Angst—understood not only as fear, but as a structural condition of the present—the project approaches migration as an experience in which instability becomes materialized, displaced, and given new meanings through objects.

If this condition, as suggested by the curatorial framework, emerges from the loss of stable coordinates and the difficulty of finding one’s bearings within political, cultural, and affective systems, migration embodies precisely this state: a rupture from the familiar and an entry into contexts where the rules are at once precise and incomprehensible.

In this sense, migration does not respond solely to external crises; it also entails an internal transformation in which identity, belonging, and memory remain in constant negotiation.

The exhibition KEEP IN TOUCH (09/10–21/11/2026) explores social spaces and the architecture of encounter: how do we want to live together and stay in touch across generations and cultures in the future?

A participatory artistic photography project explores gestures as transitions between private and communal spaces, through the passage of time and across cultural boundaries, showing how we can encounter, understand and ‘connect’ with one another anew today, and overcome our fears.

Building on the neighbourhood art projects of Raw Matters im Hof, a performance workshop will explore intergenerational coexistence together with visitors. The encounters that arise during this process will be visually documented in the open-access photography studio.

Curated by Center for Peripheries

From Mexico to Albania, from former Yugoslavia to Afghanistan, from East Germany to Syria, there live generations of people whose sense of reality shattered from one moment to the next: a major shift in their country’s political landscape transformed every aspect of their daily life. Off the Precipice is a curated group exhibition with eleven artists from different contexts where such a rupture took place. In their investigations of this change, they draw relationships between various occurrences around the world. When the values you held dear, the art and culture you were embedded in, and the rules that governed your everyday become obsolete, what happens to your sense of self?

In the exhibition space of kunsthalle exnergasse, conceived as a volumetric framework, the artworks are situated along a system of axes that “disperses” them, spreading their elements so that they come into contact with each other, forming new networks of exchange and narratives of solidarity across spacetime.

The guided tour will be followed by the performance Giwiinoondaagozimin by Holden Madagame.

Holden Madagame will perform a 20-minute narrative, ritual-based piece involving movement, drumming, and voice, titled ‘Giwiinoondaagozimin’ which means ‘We want to be heard’ in Anishinaabemowin, his indigenous language. Connecting the 7 Fires Prophecy, which leads all peoples of the world to reclaim the old wisdom of their ancestors, they create a portal through which his ancestors speak through time, space, and music.

“As I finally sing and drum as loud as I can, my voice is 1000 times louder. The drum is thousands of drums. My ancestors are all here with me, singing through me. Their drums are all drumming through my drum, and nothing can hurt me.”

In keeping with this year’s VIENNA ART WEEK theme, “Navigating Angst,” the Az W invites visitors to meet key figures in the architecture scene who use times of uncertainty as a catalyst for innovative ideas and transform challenges into opportunities.

The Institute of Building Research & Innovation embodies this spirit by developing evidence-based solutions for a sustainable building culture. By combining science and technology, it translates people’s practical needs into forward-looking construction in an environmentally responsible manner. This includes new approaches to low-emission and resource-efficient residential construction, as well as research into low-carbon cooling systems for buildings.

The architectural firm led by Juri Troy is distinguished by an integrative, future-oriented approach. Its work combines culturally significant building concepts with strategies for energy efficiency and CO₂ neutrality, with a particular focus on renewable raw materials such as local wood and clay.

As part of VIENNA ART WEEK, the curators invite you to an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition Feminist Futures Forever at Belvedere 21.

The focus is on the diversity of artistic practices. Feminist demands, sociopolitical impacts, and diverse temporalities are interwoven: Each concern engages critically with history and the present to address the conditions of an imagined future. Feminist Futures Forever follows this principle and, through a retrospective look at the 1985 exhibition Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn, brings international, intersectional, and cross-generational positions into dialogue with one another.

The exhibition features works by artists ranging from the feminist avant-garde to the youngest generation. The focus is on artworks that address sociopolitical, gender-specific, and ecological issues. The targeted expansion of the Belvedere’s collection also plays a key role in this context. The exhibited works critically reexamine the past, engage with our present, and make demands for a shared future. In this sense, the exhibition’s title should also be understood as a call for new possible perspectives: Feminist Futures Forever!

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

As a companion to the exhibition Arnulf Rainer & Hermann Nitsch at the Arnulf Rainer Museum in Baden, the Nitsch Foundation in Vienna will present, from 10 November 2026, a compelling dialogue between two outstanding Austrian artists of the post-war avant-garde.

Entitled Nitsch & Arnulf Rainer – Radical Shifts in 20th-Century Art, the exhibition brings together two artistic positions that radically challenged the boundaries of the image, the body and the traditional concept of art. Overpainting and action, trace and body, destruction and transformation become forms of expression through which the creative process itself becomes the subject.

One connection between Rainer and Nitsch is the engagement with fear as an existential human experience. In Rainer’s work, fear becomes visible through gestural intensity, distortion and overpainting, turning the picture plane into a site of direct confrontation with inner states of tension. Nitsch extends this exploration into space and into the physical and sensory experience of the action. In his Orgien Mysterien Theater, action, ritual, colour and sound become means of bringing suppressed sensations to the surface and initiating processes of transformation and catharsis.

The exhibition demonstrates how differently Rainer and Nitsch responded to the radical shifts in art after 1945, while also revealing the close connections between their approaches through their shared interest in process, materiality, corporeality and existential experience. At the same time, the presentation offers a complementary perspective to the exhibition at the Arnulf Rainer Museum and invites visitors to follow the artistic dialogue between Rainer and Nitsch across both exhibition venues.

The exhibition will be opened by Dr. Nikolaus Kratzer, whose guest lecture will introduce the dialogue between the two artists.

Kunsthalle Wien is pleased to present the first institutional solo exhibition in Austria by Tiffany Sia (b. 1988, Hong Kong).

The exhibition focuses on a new film entitled Overt Listening. Set on the Kinmen Islands in Taiwan, just a few kilometers off the Chinese coast, the film critically examines the aftermath of the Cold War, highlighting the history of difficult and often imperceptible geopolitical tensions in the region of the Pacific Theater.

Sia combines footage of historical sites such as military bunkers with landscape scenes of deserted beaches. This is accompanied by the sound of radio broadcasts and military exercises. Unfolding in a series of chapters in a spatial installation across the ground floor of Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier, the work mixes collected oral narratives, official histories and popular culture in an expansive, filmic essay. Tiffany Sia’s Overt Listening is co-produced with KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.

The opening speeches will be interpreted into Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS).

Sign language interpreter Eva Böhm and an art educator will guide visitors through Tiffany Sia’s exhibition.

Tiffany Sia’s first institutional solo exhibition in Austria presents the film Overt Listening. Taking the Taiwanese Kinmen Islands as its point of departure, the work examines the aftermath of the Cold War and the geopolitical tensions that continue to shape the region today.

In a multilayered film installation, Sia combines historical sites, landscape footage, sound recordings, and both oral and official narratives into an essayistic work.

Because sound, radio voices, and acoustic signals play a central role in the piece, a key focus of the guided tour is to make this auditory dimension visible and tangible, and to convey its significance for the film’s narrative structure.

"The Great Michelangelo Is Dead!" – Curator's tour with Helmut Draxler

Avant-garde and Academicism aims to give a new twist to an age-old debate. Academicism is not seen as a pejorative term for everything that is outdated in art, nor is avant-garde perceived as having a monopoly on all that is new. Rather, it seeks to reveal the creative tension between these two concepts, both from an in-depth historical perspective and its place within the field of contemporary art.

The title of the exhibition alludes to a paradox: Giorgio Vasari, who was directly involved in the founding of the first modern art academy, namely the Accademia del Disegno in Florence (1563), regarded Michelangelo’s works as the unsurpassable apogee of art, achieved for the first time since Antiquity.

That perfection, in a sense tantamount to the end of art as such, represented the starting point for the academy, the essential purpose of which is to provide the divinely inspired artist with an academically accomplished counterpart capable of emulating this great role model without necessarily having to be a creative genius himself. Accordingly, the celebrations marking Michelangelo’s funeral (1564) represented the Accademia’s first public activity.

Clearly distinct from the traditional model of the bottega and its guild-based organisational structure, the academy positioned itself within the ambit of modern institutional structures precisely because of this division between ideal and efficiency. In doing so, it also triggered the anti-academic reactions discernible since the 18th century and, later, its equivalent expression in the avant-garde.

The exhibition aims to trace this fundamental interplay between the founding of academies, the criticism thereof and academy reform through selected examples, through to the present day. That interplay can be understood as the truly productive and dynamic moment of modern art; it is evident in individual artistic practices as well as in theoretical reflections and institutional structures.

Works by Giorgio Vasari, Sandro Botticelli, Titiano Vecellio known as Titian, Artemisia Gentileschi, Charles Le Brun, Nicolas Poussin, Joachim von Sandrart, Pierre Subleyras, Januarius Zick, Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, William Hogarth, Gustave Courbet, Francis Picabia, Roy Lichtenstein, Markus Lüpertz, Chris Reinecke, Jörg Immendorff, Katharina Sieverding, Louise Lawler, Vaginal Davis, Stephan Dillemuth, Andy Hope 1930, Gunter Reski, Hong Zeiss et al.

The original paintings and graphic works are complemented by the classical academic practice of copying – in our case, through old and new copies of High Renaissance and Baroque paintings – as well as by reinterpretations by contemporary artists such as Abel Auer, Alice Creischer, Thomas Eggerer, Michaela Eichwald, Abdulnasser Gharem, Stephan Janitzky, Jutta Koether, Birgit Megerle, and Heimo Zobernig.

Artist Statment

“Crude oil plays a part in our globalised world as a fuel and as a raw material for countless products. Its form and significance are constantly changing within various cycles.

I use recycled carbon fibres from old aircraft components as my “canvas” and paraffin wax left over from candles as my “paint”—two materials that are made from petroleum, yet, fascinatingly, behave in diametrically opposed ways. Analogue photographs or historical archive material provide the motifs. I paint in layers on the carbon fibres with hot wax before melting parts of them, creating lines and structures that recall aberrations in digital images.

I am interested in the point at which technology suddenly appears organic again—almost as if returning to a natural cycle. Aviation fascinates me too because of its ambivalence. It stands for freedom and progress but unfortunately is also emblematic of war and environmental damage.”

The exhibition Seeds. Reclaiming Roots, Sowing Futures explores the multilayered meanings of seeds as a mirror of our relationship to the earth and one another.

Works of fourteen international artists tell of disappearance and preservation, of loss and regeneration, of the poetic as well as political potential intrinsic to mutual concern and shared growing. Opening: 'Renata Poljak. More'

11/11/2026

19:00 — 22:00 h

KunstHausWien

Untere Weißgerberstraße 13, 1030 Wien, Österreich

Renata Poljak’s solo exhibition assembles an oeuvre in which the sea, islands, life stories, ecological disasters and hopes for a better future are all interconnected. Poljak intertwines her own personal story of departure for new shores with broader histories of migration and forced displacement.

The anchor point of the exhibition is the neon sculpture more more more – a play on the Croatian word more (sea) and two English nuances of more: as a burden and a desire. The repetition in the title thus evokes the sea both as the place of departure as well as the expression of a desire for something beyond existing circumstances: a wish for more, for somewhere else, for a better life. With the Croatian island of Brač in the grip of a drought, turning the land fully barren and causing enormous hardship, Poljak’s great-grandfather left to search for work and went to Chile. Her great-grandmother remained behind and waited for her husband, who – like many of the men forced to leave – never returned.

This tension between departing and waiting, loss and hope, runs through Poljak’s films. Partenza (2016), the Italian word for “departure” that is also used in Croatia’s island and coastal dialects, connects the migration from the islands of Croatia at the beginning of the 20th century to the current refugee and migration flows across the seas.

In Yet Another Departure (2018) personal memories and political history come together. The onetime admiralty vessel of the Yugoslav Navy, the Vis, deliberately sunk in 2016 to turn it into a diving attraction for tourists, lies under sea. In its direct vicinity, the Brijuni Archipelago recalls the meeting of 1956 that laid the foundations for the Non-Aligned Movement. A woman who has waited a century for her husband continues to gaze out at the sea. Without having moved far from her birthplace, she has lived through five different political systems and regimes.

Porvenir (2020) shows a trip to Tierra del Fuego. The title means “future”; Croatian immigrants founded the town of Porvenir at the beginning of the 20th century. In the hope of finding a better life, generations of people have crossed the seas – leaving behind poverty, starvation and war.

Finally, four photograph collages from the series Partenza (2016–2026) restage their story in a sheltered corner of the exhibition, continuing this oeuvre that crosses times, geographies and generations.

“MMMQ – Archaeology of the Present”: A performance by Thomas Geiger

MuseumsQuartier Wien - Boule-Bahn

Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien, Österreich

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

A performance marking the 25th anniversary of MQ

In the performance MMMQ, a guide leads visitors through the MuseumsQuartier, but from the perspective of a distant future. He attempts to piece together the few enigmatic fragments into a picture of our present: incomplete, contradictory, and full of projections.

The ruins of the MQ become the starting point for a speculative archaeology that opens up new perspectives on social habits, cultural values, and technological achievements. What seems self-evident or irrefutable today suddenly reveals itself as one possibility among many.

Thomas Geiger (b. 1983, lives in Vienna) develops performative situations that interweave diverse times, places, and subjects, opening up new perspectives on history and social structures. He converses with statues (Bust Talks, since 2018), guides the audience through the subconscious of institutions (Being Kunsthalle Wien, 2022), or undertakes time travels into the future of the past (25 Years Too Late, 2025). In recent years, he has realized projects with, among others, the Kunstmuseum Bochum, Salzburger Kunstverein, Kunstverein Hannover, CAPC Bordeaux, Belvedere, Kunsthalle Wien, Kunstverein Siegen, CAC Brétigny, Wiener Festwochen, and steirischer herbst.

A Lecture Performance by Marianne Vlaschits and Chanyoung Park

As an accompanying event to artist JJJJJerome Ellis’ solo exhibition at the Secession, contemporary art researcher Chanyoung Park and artist Marianne Vlaschits will perform “linguistic care work,” which understands that “language is a relational act that requires a willingness to calibrate to others’ languaging needs” (The Crip Linguistics Reader, 2025).

Speaking with a stutter and speaking with an accent have long been pathologized as something undesirable and something to be fixed or rid of altogether.

This pathologization is a product of ableist assumptions that there is a ‘correct’ way to speak, articulate, and communicate. This toxic logic views communication as transactional, where time becomes commodified and any deviance from communicative efficiency is seen as the failure of the dysfluent speaker.

Rejecting such logic, Vlaschits and Park invite the audience to witness and take part in communication based on care.

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

The tour offers insights into the exhibition’s concept and highlights the diverse connections between Samsonow’s artistic practice and selected works from the Heidi Horten Collection.

With this major solo exhibition, the Heidi Horten Collection is dedicating its first comprehensive exhibition to the artist and philosopher Elisabeth von Samsonow (*1956, Germany; living in Austria since 1995), presenting her work in all its artistic diversity and intellectual depth.

Sculptures, paintings, drawings, films and a site-specific installation offer an insight into a practice that moves between art, philosophy and anthropology. Early works enter into dialogue with current groups of works, allowing visitors to experience the development of an extraordinary artistic and theoretical position.

At the heart of Samsonow’s work lies the earth as the bearer of history, life, energy and collective memory. Her works take up cultural-historical motifs and translate them into an independent contemporary visual language. In particular, her monumental wooden sculptures, including works made from a thousand-year-old lime tree, explore questions of origin, physicality, transformation and community.

VAW FOR ALL: Tour w Austrian Sign Language interpreter Eva Böhm of the current exhibitions

Sign language interpreter Eva Böhm, together with an art mediator from the Secession, will lead a guided tour of the current exhibitions by Bernhard Leitner, Lap-See Lam and JJJJJerome Ellis.

Admission and the guided tour are free of charge. No registration required.

About the exhibitions:

For over five decades, Bernhard Leitner has pursued a cross-media practice at the intersections between acoustics, architecture, sculpture, and artistic research. His oeuvre lets us understand sound in new ways – as a more than merely acoustic phenomenon, as something that evolves in three dimensions, physically and architecturally.

Lap-See Lam’s work renders the architecture of diaspora as a site of spectral recursion, spaces and figures that flicker between presence and erasure, simulation and memory. Working with 3D scanning, animation, sculpture, and installation, she explores how cultural identity is mediated through reproduction, myth, and spatial displacement.

JJJJJerome Ellis’s work radically reconfigures our relationship to time, speech, and legibility, offering a poetics of interruption that is both deeply personal and structurally political. Through performance, sound, writing, and improvisation, Ellis treats dysfluency, not as deficit, but as a modality of time that resists the violence of normative fluency and capitalist temporalities.

Talk: "Kill your car before it kills you - Climate crisis, climate anxiety and activism"

Folke Köbberling (artist and professor of architecture related art, TU BS)
Reinhard Steurer (assoc. professor of climate politics, BOKU Wien)
Ida Zahradnik (artist and landscape planner)

Moderation: Olga Wukounig (curator, KÖR Wien)

Folke Köbberling‘s sculpture „Maaaaash!“ is a 1:1 replica of a luxury offroad SUV made out of a specially developed compostable material. Exposed to the elements, the sculpture will slowly rot and provide a breeding ground for animals and plants. The sculptural process becomes an act of protest against the hegemony of the motor vehicle and the way cars take possession of, and privatize, public spaces.

Since April, when „Maaaaash!“ was first installed, there has been hardly any rain, and the sculpture now also reflects the intense heat and persistent drought. It is against this backdrop that the discussion “Kill your car before it kills you” will take place.

How do art and science respond to the imminent threat of climate catastrophe? What role does activism play in setting off the urgently needed shift in thinking?

Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Wien, Österreich

Curated by Vanessa Joan Müller and Matthias Michalka

“Anyone can find or make one or more rooms of any shape, size, proportion, and color – then furnish them perhaps, maybe paint some part or everything. Everyone else can come in and, if the room(s) are furnished, they can also arrange them, accommodating themselves as they see fit. Each day things will change.”

Allan Kaprow’s Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy for Hans Hofmann was created in 1963 as part of an exhibition intended as a tribute to his teacher, Hofmann. Kaprow’s set of instructions invites the audience to rearrange furniture within a spatial setting. This playful activation in the spirit of the “Happening,” also encourages a less conventional view of the museum: a form of deliberate disorder within an institutional environment. For Kaprow, each restaging of Push and Pull signifies reinvention, fostering creative participation and highlighting the constant state of change.

The mumok places Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy at the core of an exhibition that explores collective action and the artistic process beyond the notion of singular authorship. Selected works from the museum’s collection offer diverse perspectives on transforming the museum space into a temporary studio of creative activity.

As part of this year’s VIENNA ART WEEK, themed “Navigating Angst,” Dom Museum Wien invites visitors to a thematic guided tour that explores the polarities of fear and courage as dimensions of experience in art and contemporary life.

Museum Director Johanna Schwanberg and systemic psychotherapist and psychotraumatologist Cristina Budroni will guide participants through the permanent and special exhibition at Dom Museum Wien. In engaging with precious works of Christian art, primal fears such as illness, pain, loss, and death come into focus, as does the longing for healing, happiness, and eternal life.

The special exhibition which is dedicated to the ambivalent relationship between humans and animals, expands this perspective to include questions of disgust, projection, and (lack of) empathy toward other living beings.

At the intersection of aesthetic experience and psychological reflection, art becomes a space where the fundamental human emotion of fear is not only made visible but can also be renegotiated.

Cristina Budroni, born in Cagliari, Sardinia.

Systemic psychotherapist, trauma therapist, and hypnotherapist in private practice. Psychogerontological work with Holocaust survivors and their subsequent generations. Areas of focus: trauma, transgenerational transmission of trauma, particularly in the context of migration, and intercultural psychotherapy.

Reflections on selected works from the exhibition Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism with the curators Ivan Ristić and Kerstin Jesse

Faces reveal “visions,” bodies enact psychological abysses, attraction and repulsion lie close together. Even this brief overview of the subjects suggests how insistently the radical representatives of Viennese fin-de-siècle painting replaced the person with personality. Physical space, too, acquired a new intensity: whether in Young Woman before Birdcage by Broncia Koller-Pinell (c. 1907), which evokes thoughts of an imprisoned self, or in Egon Schiele’s fragile nude models, suspended in a vacuum.

Around 1900, the booming imperial city of Vienna had become large enough to stand for an entire world in upheaval. Symptoms of a crisis that would precede the catastrophe of the First World War were apparent everywhere: traditional values were being questioned, while fears went hand in hand with resentment. As Carl E. Schorske observed using Vienna as an example, “the man of reason had to yield his place to a richer, but also more dangerous and unstable creature, the homo psychologicus.” Art freed itself from the primacy of beauty and ventured onto the playground of the psyche; within both social and individual disorientation, people recognized a previously unimagined poetic potential.

About the exhibition

This year’s theme provides the starting point for HOUSE OF NAVIGATING ANGST, an exhibition curated by Robert Punkenhofer, Artistic Director of the VIENNA ART WEEK, and co-curator Anne Zühlke.

The exhibition is presented in a striking late-19th-century building in Vienna’s 15th district, which, before undergoing renovation, will be transformed into the VIENNA ART WEEK’s festival headquarters for one week.

Spanning four levels—from the basement to the top floor— the exhibition brings together works by 30 international artists. It approaches the phenomenon of angst from different perspectives, while also making the building itself part of the artistic exploration.

Opening: 'Virginie Bailly / Willem Boel: Die Probe', curated by Roxane Baeyens

08/11/2026

19:00 — 21:30 h

Kunstraum am Schauplatz

Praterstraße 42/2 hof, 1020 Wien, Österreich

Die Probe (the rehearsal, the trial, the test), a duo exhibition by Virginie Bailly and Willem Boel, unfolds within the framework of VIENNA ART WEEK’s “Navigating Angst”, a theme that considers how art can help us confront a world marked by profound uncertainty, ecological crisis and political anxiety without necessarily providing simple solutions.

For Bailly and Boel, it is precisely the desire for simple solutions that needs to be questioned. In a reality increasingly shaped by polarisation, acceleration and short-term thinking, complexity is easily reduced to something manageable: a single image, an opinion, an answer. Their work moves in the opposite direction. Rather than narrowing the field of vision, both artists seek to keep it open.

The title Die Probe — the rehearsal, the trial, the test — embodies this position. A rehearsal is not a conclusion. It is a temporary state in which something can be attempted, reconsidered, altered or abandoned. Failure and uncertainty are not interruptions of the process but necessary parts of it. In this sense, Die Probe proposes an artistic attitude that embraces not-knowing as a productive condition.

This tension between simplicity and complexity connects both practices. Neither Bailly nor Boel attempts to translate the anxieties of the present into recognisable images or singular problems that might subsequently be solved. Instead, their works resist the pressure to arrive too quickly at an answer. They create situations in which different perspectives, contradictions and uncertainties can remain present simultaneously.

Within “Navigating Angst”, this refusal becomes significant. To navigate does not necessarily mean to know exactly where one is going. It can also mean learning to move through uncertainty while remaining attentive to what appears along the way. Art, from this perspective, is less a tool for resolving anxiety than a space in which our relationship to uncertainty can be reconsidered.

Die Probe therefore proposes openness as a counterweight to fear. Against short-term thinking, it introduces duration and repetition. Against the narrowing of perspective, it offers multiplicity. Against the demand for immediate clarity, it allows ambiguity, curiosity and wonder. The exhibition does not offer a map out of uncertainty. Instead, Bailly and Boel invite us to remain within it for a while: to rehearse, to reconsider, to look again — and perhaps to discover that keeping the mind open is itself a way of navigating.

Artist Talk: 'JONAS HÖSCHL | Police Horses for Austria'

ARTIST TALK – Jonas Höschl in Conversation with Anne Zühlke, Co-Curator of VIENNA ART WEEK, and Josef Rosengarten, Political Education Advisor/ Gesellschaft für kritische Bildung Österreich (GfkBÖ)

The solo exhibition Polizeipferde für Österreich (Police Horses for Austria) by Jonas Höschl at Bildraum 01 presents a documentation of his performative intervention of the same name, which took place as part of the opening of the Vienna art fair Parallel Vienna 2026.

The work takes as its starting point the plans to introduce a mounted police unit in Vienna. In April 2019, the mounted police were out on the streets of downtown Vienna for the first time, training under real-world conditions. After costing approximately 2.5 million euros, the project was discontinued in late 2019 in the wake of the Ibiza scandal and the subsequent new elections.

By reenacting a real, yet ultimately unsuccessful measure the piece explores the discrepancy between political symbolism and reality, while also examining the aesthetics and mechanisms of authoritarian politics.

In addition to the exhibition, an artist talk with Jonas Höschl, artist; Anne Zühlke, co-curator of VIENNA ART WEEK; and Josef Rosengarten, political education specialist, will take place as part of VIENNA ART WEEK.

Based on the specific example of the failed measure and Jonas Höschl’s performative intervention, they will discuss the issue of police violence and examine the aesthetics of authoritarian politics from artistic, curatorial, and academic perspectives.

“Managing Fear: The Economics of Salvation” — A Guided Tour on the Expectations of Salvation in the Work of Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer’s Altarpiece of All Saints is considered one of the most significant works of the European Renaissance. The painting offers a glimpse into premodern strategies for securing the future.

This tour examines the altarpiece not only as a masterpiece of religious art, but also as an expression of a society that lived with existential uncertainty, illness, death, and fear for the salvation of one’s own soul.

At the heart of this and other paintings are questions of the expectation of salvation, provision for the afterlife, and spiritual economy: How did “salvation” function in a world without social security? What role did good deeds, charitable endowments, and piety play as forms of symbolic investment in eternal life?

The All Saints’ Altarpiece thus appears as a model of premodern risk management, in which religious practice, social prestige, and hope for divine grace were closely intertwined.

The tour combines art-historical analysis with cultural and economic-historical perspectives and demonstrates how much notions of security, return on investment, and the future already shaped thinking around 1500—albeit under different circumstances than today.

As the VIENNA ART WEEK 2026, with its motto NAVIGATING ANGST, explores the pervasive and structural dimension of fear as the ambient noise of the present, the MAK becomes a resonance chamber for key questions: How can art provide orientation in times of social, political, and technological upheaval? And how does our understanding of art change in light of these ruptures?

The MAKtour The Design of the Secret and the Uncanny, and the talk “Working in the Prop Department” — A Conversation with Thomas Demand and Anna Viebrock generate a forcefield wherein uncertainty is shown to be not only a challenge, but a productive impetus for reflection and empowerment. From design in times of change to curatorial strategies for dealing with societal insecurities, the events offer different perspectives onto the present.

Orientation is thereby not understood as the resolution of contradictions, but as the capacity to endure and grapple with complexity – between irritation and criticism, between analysis and imagination. Here, angst manifests not only as a symptom of our times, but also as a possible starting point for confronting its political instrumentalization.

As part of VIENNA ART WEEK and its theme “Navigating Angst,” Barbara Husar translates the unpredictable energy of lightning into sound.

Lightning is a high-energy electrical discharge, a process of equalization between clouds and Earth. In a single instant, the surrounding air reaches temperatures of up to 30,000 Kelvin, about five times the temperature of the Sun’s surface. In sand, the energy of the discharge transforms quartz into glass.

What remains is a fulgurite*: a hollow, branching structure in which the path of lightning materializes, holding an extreme event in mineral form. In the Fulgurite Flute, this geological trace becomes a resonant body. Through the flow of breath, the mineral trace of a lightning strike reawakens as sound. The individual form of each fulgurite shapes how the air vibrates within it and the sound that emerges. The fulgurite is both geological record and instrument.

Barbara Husar developed the Fulgurite Flute in dialogue with astrophysicist Michel Breitfellner, tracing the passage from geophysical event to sound. Together with flute maker and musician Stefan Kronsteiner and producer André Lehner, the project continues in the album FLUX FULGUR: a series of fulgurite flutes in interplay with the elements that brought them into being.

* Fulgurites (from the Latin word “fulgur”, meaning lightening) form when lightning strikes the ground and melts the soil. Often, the material in the center is blown away or vaporized, creating a hole—hence the German name “Blitzröhre” (lightning tube).

There are also fulgurites that are not generated by natural lightning but by high-voltage power lines that have fallen to the ground. A famous example was excavated and scientifically examined by the NHM in Kaltenbach, Vitis, Lower Austria, in 2007.

The oldest fulgurite in the collection of the NHM is likely a prepared specimen from Germany dating to 1823. A fulgurite from an unknown location is on display in Hall IV, showcase 188, among the special rocks formed under extreme conditions (temperature, pressure, and/or deformation velocity).

Each year, VIENNA ART WEEK dedicates an afternoon to a series of in-depth program events exploring the theme of that year’s edition, designed to encourage reflection and further thought.

KEYNOTE BY IVAN KRASTEV

When We Went to See the End of the World

In Robert Silverberg’s 1972 science fiction story “When We Went to See the End of the World,” time-tripping had become the nation’s foremost growth industry. People spent their holidays travelling to the end of days to watch the world sink under water, burn, or simply disappear.

But while the aficionados of extinction tourism were telling their stories of the world’s last hours, the news reported that an earthquake had levelled California, a monstrous amoeba was poisoning the water supply, the American president had just been assassinated, and riots were tearing the city apart.

Watching it unfold, one senses that, unlike the disasters glimpsed on distant time trips, it is political rather than natural catastrophe that brings the world to its end. If you wish to see the end of the world, you need only look out the window.

The world we live in is not very different. And the question is: could the shadow of the catastrophe be our best chance to guarantee the future of humanity?

My answer is No.

Ivan Krastev is Albert Hirschman Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna and Chair of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia (CLS). He is a founding board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and serves on the European Investment Bank’s Global Advisory Council and the Board of Directors of GLOBSEC.

A contributing editor at the Financial Times, Krastev is the author of Is It Tomorrow, Yet? How the Pandemic Changes Europe (2020), The Light That Failed: A Reckoning (2019, with Stephen Holmes), which won the Lionel Gelber Prize, After Europe (2017), Democracy Disrupted: The Global Politics of Protest (2014), and In Mistrust We Trust: Can Democracy Survive When We Don’t Trust Our Leaders? In 2020, he was awarded the Jean Améry Prize for European Essay Writing.

NAVIGATING ANGST 2026 Line-up | Panel with Sepp Schellhorn, Bettina Leidl & Oleksa Saienko

09/11/2026

18:00 — 19:30 h

Dorotheum

Dorotheergasse 17, 1010 Wien, Österreich

Registration required

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

Every year, VIENNA ART WEEK organizes an afternoon featuring in-depth program events centered on the theme of that year’s edition, designed to inspire reflection and further thought.

At the invitation of VIENNA ART WEEK—in cooperation with PARNASS art magazine and the Dorotheum—a distinguished panel will discuss the role that politics can play in protecting art and culture in times of war, repression, and threats to democracy.

Where democratic structures are under threat, where human rights are at risk, and where war, persecution, or political repression dominate daily life, the work of artists becomes particularly crucial to the system, as it builds resilience in society. At the same time, artists are especially vulnerable because of their key role in society.

Taking up the theme of this year’s VIENNA ART WEEK, “Navigating Angst,” this panel discussion features Sepp Schellhorn, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA), Bettina Leidl, Director of the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, artist Kateryna Lysovenko (UA) and cultural manager Oleksandra Saienko (UA), along with moderator Silvie Aigner, Editor-in-Chief of PARNASS Art Magazine, will discuss protection and solidarity mechanisms for at-risk artists and analyze related initiatives by the Ukraine Office Austria and the Artists Solidarity Program Europe (ASoP) at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Open Studio Fearless Tour

07/11/2026

14:00 — 18:00 h

Gerald Straub

Vogelweidplatz 3, 1150 Wien, Österreich

Registration required

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

By and with Gerald Straub

Where does fear begin—and where does courage end?
Where does courage begin—and where does fear end?
Who takes it away, and who gives it?

These questions do not only pertain to individual dilemmas; they are also increasingly becoming central sticking points in dealing with right-wing populist politics.

Terms such as “community,” “care,” and “togetherness” occupy a significant place in civil society debates. These are important and necessary concepts for describing social cohesion—but what is missing are the corresponding spaces for action and tools that enable each individual not only to reflect on these ideas but also to translate that knowledge into appropriate action.

Yes, of course, we’ve known this for quite some time. So how do we act together now?

This tour is also an attempt to address these two questions concretely within an artistic context: Who is afraid of what? What happens to artworks without their authorship? What question have I always wanted to ask? How many “status points” are lost if you simply take a vacation instead of doing a residency? What is considered courageous in artistic practice

Using concrete examples, these questions will be explored together with all participants on site.

We’ll try to approach (un)pleasant instructions with less fear, sharing both our courage and our fears along the way. Perhaps works of art and objects will also be collected in the respective studios—and, in the true spirit of piracy, accepted and shared as “treasures.” Are we all in the same boat, or not?

In the process, we ourselves become art pirates and cultural creators. Traces, references, and conclusions are blurred. And in the end, we’ll visit this year’s VIENNA ART WEEK exhibition and then exhibit our own work right there—with or without a pinch* of performance.

* The booty: Originally, sailors and pirates referred to the stolen or captured goods on a ship as a “prize” (from the French prendre = to take)

The “Open Studio Fearless Tour 2026” winds through the 15th district—and into the studios of:

Thomas Steineder
Arnold Reinthaler
Bernhard Buhmann
Pelzgasse 20
Theresa Ulrike Cellnigg

“War & Colonialism: Can We Take Action Despite Our Fear?”— Guided Tour of 'Raining Blood'

10/11/2026

17:00 — 18:00 h

Weltmuseum Wien

Heldenplatz 21/4, 1010 Wien, Österreich

Registration required

EVENT LANGUAGE: GERMAN

Millions of people worldwide are affected by war, displacement, and violence. For those who have the “privilege” of being confronted only with media images of these conflicts, the militarization in Europe is increasingly giving real substance to fears of being personally affected. How can one manage to remain capable of taking action despite all this?

A substantive examination of the foundations of the threat of war can be a first step toward better assessing it. It should be noted that this threat is part of a history of violence closely linked to colonial expansion and, consequently, to the emergence of the modern capitalist world order.

The special exhibition Raining Blood: Photography and Arms Trafficking at the Weltmuseum Wien uses photographs, historical objects, and archival materials to explore the interconnections between the arms trade, colonial violence, and war around 1900. In doing so, it offers perspectives on the historical processes that have had a lasting impact on today’s global power structure.

Building on the exhibition, this educational program explores the role of the arms trade and colonial wars—such as the genocide in German South West Africa—in the formation of the modern world system. Together, we will examine how colonial continuities continue to have an impact today and how historical contexts can help us better understand current conflicts.

For many decades, the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture has been providing studios for visual artists. Currently, subsidized studios are allocated at the two locations on Westbahnstraße and Wattgasse, and the studios in the Prater are managed by the ministry.

A total of 48 studios for artists in these fields are allocated through a publicly announced open call and following a juried selection process by an independent panel of experts.

In addition, under the recently launched program “PART International Art Residency Austria”, six project studios in the historic Prater Studios are available to support international collaborations.

During a guided tour, Ruth Horak and Katja Stecher will offer insights into the work of participating artists. The tour will include visits to the studios of:

Eva Eichinger
Manuel Gorkiewicz
Kerstin von Gabain
Ernst Yohji Jäger
Elisabeth Kihlström
Doris Piwonka
Michael Strasser
